Colt Special Model 1861 Contract Rifle Musket

American Civil War


.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three rounded clamping bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, full length walnut musket stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with 1861 pattern three leaf rear sight, combination front sight and socket bayonet lug and sling swivels on the triggerguard bow and middle barrel band. Standard Colt lock markings, dated 1863 at tail. Breech dated 1863 as well and left flat with V/P/{Eagle Head} inspection marks as well as M 3 and STEEL markings. Counterpane with clear script MTH cartouche at tail. {ANTIQUE}

Condition
Good to very good. Bore good, moderately oxidized and frosted with some dirt and strong rifling, will likely clean to better. Metal with scattered patches of surface rust and some roughness. Markings remain clear in metal and wood. Mechanically functional lock. Stock crisp with good cartouche and strong edges, showing scattered bumps, dings and mars.
